Dear Editor,

Nita Purcal is correct; the date should have read the 1900s not the 19th century. The rest of the article makes plain the time period that is being discussed was the early 20th century. I apologise for the error.¹

It was sad to note, however, that the main text of Purcal's letter presents an uncritical view of medical and nursing involvement in the subordination of midwifery. Purcal writes as if professional power and occupational territory was not the main focus of their efforts as my paper has argued and supported with evidence.
